There was a lot of buzz on campus about our event with David Azerrad on How to Debate Social Issues with Liberals and Atheists back in February. Unfortunately, we had to cancel the event because David was sick, but we have rescheduled it!
The new date is Thursday, March 30th at 9:00 PM in the Gentile Gallery.
We hope to see you there!
Welcome back! We hope you had a good break.
Welcome back to campus. This is going to be another big semester for our Franciscan University Young Americans for Freedom club and we hope you’ll get involved!
This year’s elections
I know a lot of us are discouraged by the choices in the presidential race. But we have to remember that there are important down-ballot elections for offices like governor, U.S. Congress, and state legislatures, among others. It’s critical that everyone votes in those elections so that there will be a conservative majority in Congress to hold the line and that we have conservatives in state government. We can’t afford to sit this election out!
Values Voter Summit in DC next weekend
Next weekend (9/8-9/11), we will be going to the Values Voter Summit (VVS) in Washington, DC. VVS is one of the largest conservative conferences in the country, with a special focus on social and cultural issues. Speakers for this year’s summit include Matt Walsh, Rick Santorum, the Benham Brothers, Phil Robertson, Jon Voight, Donald Trump, David Daleiden, dozens of current and former elected officials, and many brilliant people you’ve never heard of who are on the front lines of conservatism. It’s a great networking opportunity, and it’s a lot of fun. We will be leaving campus on Thursday 9/8 at 5:30 PM, and returning Sunday 9/11 in the late afternoon/early evening. The cost is $50 and covers transportation, the hotel, and your conference pass. (If you have a car and are willing to drive people, we can give you a discounted rate.) If you want to go, please email me by Monday, Sept. 5th!
9/11 Never Forget Project
This year is the 15th anniversary of the attacks of September 11th, and we will be doing our display of 2,989 flags in front of the library to commemorate the lives lost that day. 9/11 is on a Sunday this year, when there is less foot traffic around campus, so to increase the visibility of the memorial, we will be putting up flags on Sunday night and keeping them there through Monday night. We will also be showing a free screening of a 9/11 documentary on Sunday or Monday. Details TBA!
We will be helping all students to register to vote and/or get an absentee ballot for this year’s general elections in all 50 states. You can vote in your home state, or in Ohio (most students are eligible to vote in Ohio as long as they are students here). The voter drive will be held in the JC, most likely the last week of September through the first week of October. We will also be doing shuttles to the polls on election day (Nov. 8th) for students registered to vote in Steubenville. Details coming soon!
Presidential Debate Watch Parties
Our debate watch parties were extremely popular this year, and we will be holding them again for the presidential and vice presidential debates this year. The debates are scheduled for Monday 9/26, Tuesday 10/4 (VP debate), Sunday 10/9, and Wednesday 10/19. Stay tuned for details.
Leadership team and getting involved
The YAF leadership team this semester is myself, Daniel Smith, Sam Martinez, Therese Sanchez, Ben Idzik, and Sarah Hull. If you want to join our leadership team, please email us at email@example.com.
Looking forward to a great semester!
